Is editing and re-writing ever fun? Not really, especially when you are trying to make something error free and flow together seamlessly. That's what it takes to get in bookstores. Part of getting to that end goal for any author, publication, isn't all about writing and re-writing, though. It's about promotion. They call it a 'platform' and guess what, you gotta' build one. That being said, when I first heard the term, admittedly not that long ago, I nodded along until the conversation ended, then went and googled what the hell a platform was.
It means the same thing in any industry, but may come with a different name. The bottom line; however, is that you have to get your name out there, to people that matter. For writers, that means, ultimately, readers. You want to connect with the people who are going to be enjoying your books and supporting your future works. My first step towards this was creating a blog, so that if people liked what I was writing, or how I was writing, they might stick around when my book comes out. If not, that's life, but hopefully they picked up a few good author's names and links from some of my posts.
Building a platform is definitely not done overnight. There will be ups and downs, but it's something you will benefit from big time in the long run. I'm new to all this, as you guys know, but I have heard that first hand from some people who know what they are talking about. There are endless sites out there that can help you build websites, business cards, and just about anything else you can think of. A good starting point would be this article
One note about starting something....be sure to make enough time for it. I wasn't entirely prepared to juggle a blog, writing and re-writing, a job, and a social life, so it took some adjustment time. Just be ready!
Come on back for more content (and some exciting news!!), coming out tomorrow!
Cheers.
